Down but not out

What happens when we receive the worst possible news and there is nowhere left to turn? That is the question at the heart of the story of King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20. A prophet delivers a devastating verdict: set your house in order, for you are going to die. And yet, rather than accepting that fate in silence, Hezekiah turns his face to the wall, removes every distraction, and pours out his heart before God in prayer. What follows is one of the most remarkable moments in all of Scripture. God responds by saying he has heard the prayer and seen the tears, and he not only heals Hezekiah but adds fifteen years to his life and promises to defend the entire city. The lesson here is not a small one. It challenges us to ask ourselves honestly: when the bottom falls out, where do we turn first? Do we truly believe that prayer moves the hand of God, or has that become something we say without really meaning it? Hezekiah's story invites us to stop treating prayer as a last resort and start treating it as our first and most powerful response to every trial we face.
