The difference between trusting in God and trusting in man

Jan 11, 2026    Pastor Jacob Gray

This powerful message from 2 Kings chapter 8 confronts us with a crucial question that defines our spiritual journey: Do we want a relationship with God, or just the blessings from God? Through the story of Ben-Hadad, the king of Syria, we see a man who desperately wanted healing but had no interest in knowing the Healer. He sent forty camel-loads of gifts, attempting to buy God's favor, yet his heart remained far from the Lord. How often do we approach God the same way—making deals, offering bargains, promising change if only He'll answer our prayers? The passage reminds us that God cannot be bought with our offerings or manipulated by our promises. He desires genuine relationship, not religious transaction. The story takes a sobering turn when Hazael, the messenger sent to inquire of Elisha, murders Ben-Hadad and takes the throne—a stark reminder that when we place our trust in people rather than God, we set ourselves up for devastating disappointment. The message challenges us to examine where our faith truly rests: Is it in our financial security, our health, our relationships, or in the unchanging character of God? When everything else is stripped away, will our foundation remain? This isn't about expecting the worst or living in fear—it's about building our lives on the Rock that cannot be shaken, so that when storms come, we stand firm not because of our circumstances, but because of our unshakeable trust in the One who holds us.
